Real Life Comics Takes On UO, Hits Close to Home

Starting last week, Real Life Comics discussed Ultima Forever and returning to Ultima Online. It hit a little too close to home with references being made to the low player populations, people not realizing UO was still running etc.

But for UO players, you should enjoy it.

The UO story arc starts here.

I think this inadvertently highlights (or more probably it’s just me) the difference between the Ultima IP/name and a game that has Ultimalike gameplay. I will always love Ultima, but I will never understand the starstruck adulation and blind hope for subsequent IP iterations.

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

The word “Ultima” makes no difference. Neither do the humans behind its creation. Garriott himself wanted it to be called “Ultimatum”. Let the scales fall, and see for the first time. Okay, enough bullshitting.

But, my only hope for UO is that it becomes what was originally envisioned with modern (or even semi-modern) graphics. The gameplay needs to be taken to the extreme with ecological simulation and such. Saying “the players immediately killed all the deer” is a bullshit cop out.
